First cultivated in French orchards in 1980, Royal Gala has now become the second most extensively cultivated variety in France and the leading variety exported to Asia. It is available from September to March. Almost round, its brilliant skin is dappled with a lemon yellow colour streaked with orangey red. Its subtle aromas are very fruity and herbal and also feature scents of nuts and roses. A fruit bursting with sunshine, it is a very sugary apple with just a hint of sour and bitter tastes. The sweet, delicately acidic flesh, generally beige and yellow-green, is juicy and firm with delightful crunchy texture.
